Taiwan: Citi's Young Adult Financial Literacy Program Receives Outstanding Response
Taipei The Young Adult Financial Literacy Program (YAFLP), co-sponsored by Citi Taiwan and the Financial Literacy and Education Association R.O.C., has generated a very positive response. Since its launch last September, more than 4,000 university students have enrolled for the program's lectures, seminars and personal financial planning essay competition.
Shi Yuan-ling, an education major studying at the National Chiayi University was the first prizewinner and she, and the four runner-up winners were honored at an award ceremony on March 6.
Runner-up award winners:
- Guo Fu-xun (National Taipei College of Business)
- Chung Rei-yin (National Cheng Kung University)
- Liao Pei-jun (National Taiwan Normal University)
- Hsiao Yi-zhi (National Chengchi University)
Mr. Tze-kaing Yang, the former deputy minister of finance and Financial Literacy and Education Association R.O.C board member and Ms. Anita Su, Citi Taiwan presented the scholarships to the students.
During his speech, Mr. Yang, said, "We are grateful for the support that Citi has provided to help promote financial education in Taiwan. Today, we are seeing some of the outstanding results our partnership.
"In addition to equipping our university students with sound financial knowledge and skills, we would also like to reach out to primary school students this year. In the future, we also hope to offer more financial literacy courses to help children, young adults, and even adults or retire better plan their finances."
Ms. Su added, "Citi is delighted to back the 'Young Adult Financial Literacy Program' with the Financial Literacy and Education Association. Through lectures and activities we aim to help students learn about good budgeting and saving skills. The response from students has been terrific and we intend to extend the reach and impact of our programs and include more organizations and schools in the future."
The Citi Foundation funded YAFLP is offered as either a two credit class; or as a one four seminar course at nine campuses: National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, National Taipei University of Technology, Jin-Wen Institute of Technology, Taipei Medical University, St. John's University, Tung Nan Institute of Technology, National Taiwan Junior College of Performing Arts, and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. To date, close to 2000 students have participated in these.
The program is designed to provide practical advice and knowledge about the basics of finance to students.
