Belgium: Flemish Young Enterprises Vlajo & Citibank Launch 250th "Jieha!" Financial Education Program

Brussels – Vlajo (Flemish Young Enterprises), an organization, part of the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise Europe (JA-YE Europe) and Citibank Belgium are partners in financial education. They want to give youth their first experience with professional business. Through different programs, children between six and 25 years old can develop their entrepreneurial skills in their own miniature company. Last week, during Entrepreneurship Week, one of these programs, Jieha!, launched its 250th project.

Jieha! is the most recent Vlajo learning-by-doing format for fourth and fifth year pupils in secondary education. Jieha! simultaneously stimulates the entrepreneurial spirit and ethical awareness of the students in an educational action format.

The Entrepreneurship Week is a joint initiative by minister Patricia Ceysens and minister Frank Vandenbroucke. By means of the Entrepreneurship Week both ministers want to encourage Flemish education to pay more attention to the entrepreneurial attitudes and skills in the classroom, from kindergarten onwards. The theme of the 2008 edition, which ran from February 18 to February 23, is "A sense of initiative."

Jieha! stands for Young Initiative for Ethical Trade. It offers a brief entrepreneurial experience course over ten to eighteen weeks for fourth and fifth year pupils in secondary education. They set up a student enterprise and sell fair trade products in the school. Thanks to the partnership between Vlajo, Citibank and FTO (Fair Trade Original) the students learn to be ethically aware. More than 2,500 students have already participated during this school year!

During the course the students are faced with numerous problems and challenges that they have to solve as a team. In doing so, the students learn about their personal capabilities and talents. It is a new learning strategy that complements practical learning and project learning.

Vlajo helps the Jieha! on its way by giving them a starting loan. Any profits made by the students are given to a charity of their choice, which produces many great examples of teenage altruism.

The enthusiasm of the teachers and pupils, and the large number of groups taking part, prove that the project is a resounding success. In this school year we already count 250 groups in Flanders that have taken part in this program. Ultimately, almost 300 Jieha!'s, from all parts of Flanders will do their thing during this school year, which is irrefutable evidence of the strength of the project.
