Citi Guam Volunteers Head Back to School to Teach Financial Basics to Students

Guam – Citi Guam employees taught the value of saving and other money management basics to over 750 students during the recent "Teach Children to Save Day."

Over four days (April 17, 18, 19 & 24) the 47-strong Citi Guam team took time from their work schedules (150 hours in total) to teach financial education to third and fifth grade students in four public schools.

Using the Citi Financial Education curriculum, the Citi volunteers covered a range of relevant topics that included how to be smart shoppers, and the importance of saving, and where to save. To make the classes fun and interactive, the sessions included games and student-teacher team based activities.

"We are very pleased to involve more employee volunteers this year that in turn, allowed us to teach more students," said Madhu Seshadri, Citi Country Officer.

"What impressed many of us was the knowledge shown by the students. A lot of them were already aware of online banking issues such as ‘phishing’ and identity theft.

"As usual it was a great experience for everyone involved and we would like to thank the principals, faculty and staff of Price Elementary School, FQ Sanchez Elementary School, Merizo Elementary School and Marcial A. Sablan Elementary School for allowing us the chance to interact with their students. We are very proud of our progress in trying to improve our community."

Citi has been active in this initiative since 2003 and over the last five years more than 1,700 students have participated in this program.

"Teach Children to Save Day" is part of a program sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation which aims to teach children the financial facts of life. This is the fifth year that the Guam Bankers Association has joined in this national effort to promote financial literacy.
