Citi Taiwan's Young Adult Financial Education Program Targets School Leavers & Graduates

Taipei – Citi Taiwan, in partnership with the Financial Literacy and Education Association R.O.C. have launched the "The Young Adult Financial Literacy Program."

A US$100,000 grant from the Citi Foundation will be used to support the program that aims to help school leavers and university graduates gain more skills and knowledge with regards to saving, spending and investment.

At the launch, Mr. Morris Li, Citi Taiwan Country Officer said, "Financial literacy is an essential life skill and we are pleased to partner with the Financial Literacy Education Association to promote the Young Adult Financial Literacy Program.

"It will provide practical financial knowledge for young adults joining the workforce for the first time."

Mr. Chuan Lin, President of the Association and the former minister of Finance said, "The Financial Literacy and Education Association is the first organization to promote financial education to the general public. With the financial and investment environment becoming more complex, it's imperative that our young people are equipped with knowledge and skills to better plan for the future."

Many of the programs and campaigns will be based on a financial literacy survey conducted by the Financial Literacy and Education Association, R.O.C. and Citi earlier this year. The objective of the survey, which involved close to 2,000 students from 30 high schools, was to get a better understanding about the level of financial literacy among Taiwan youths.

The standout findings included:
  • Compared with students in the U.S., Taiwan youths scored slightly better in terms of financial literacy
  • Many students relied on their parents for financial guidance and advice
  • Many students in rural areas generally scored lower than their urban counterparts
  • Many students understood credit card payment and were comfortable with online banking and payment channels
  • Although many students understood the importance of maintaining a good credit record they were not aware of borrowing costs and the impact of a bad credit history
  • Many students said they needed more information and knowledge on topics such as insurance, tax and investment and risk
Online learning programs, seminars and discussion groups are some of the initiatives to be run in the Young Adult Financial Education program.
