Landmark Financial Education for the Poor Training Program Launched by Citi Indonesia

Jakarta – Helping many underprivileged Indonesians break out of the poverty cycle is the long-term objective of a financial education program launched by Citi today.

The Financial Education for the Poor program is the first such initiative to be run in Indonesia. Other similar Citi Foundation funded programs are also run in South Africa, India, Bolivia, Kenya, Morocco, the Philippines and Poland.

At the launch, Shariq Mukhtar, Country Business Manager, Citibank Indonesia, said, "One of the largest problems faced by the underprivileged in any society is the lack of basic financial management skills. As a result, they are unable to stand on their own without relying on loans from banks and others."

He added, "This program aims to give the underprivileged basic skills such as budgeting and saving so that they can make better use of their resources and in time, end their reliance on loans.”

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the 39.05 million people classified as poor in 2006, increased 10% from 2005. Many are Small or Medium Enterprise (SME) owners and their development is critical for the further growth of the Indonesian economy. The Central Bureau of Statistics said there were 42.39 million SMEs in urban and suburban centers in 2006.

To manage the program, Citi is supported by the Management Board of the Economics Faculty of University Indonesia (LMFEUI). LMFEUI will provide training to 75 cooperatives, People’s Credit Banks (BPR) and microfinancial institutions that will, in turn, train the borrowers among the poor.

"This program is a pilot project which will begin in some major Java cities like Yogyakarta, Bandung and Surabaya," said Dr. Budi W. Soetjipto, LMFEUI Managing Director.

"We are hoping that more banking and non-banking loan institutions will be involved in this program so that more poor and small businessmen will be assisted," added Dr. Budi W. Soetjipto.

The program is expected to help the poor and small businessmen to acquire credit loan from cooperatives, People’s Credit Banks (BPR) and micro financial institutions.
