Financial Realities and Responsibilities Highlighted at Citigroup's Financial Education Camp for Youth
Bangkok – The importance of being financially responsible was one of the focus topics of the 2007 Citigroup and Citibank Thailand Wealth of the Future financial education camp for teens. Held from February 2 - 4, 40 students from Mathayom province were taught a range of financial management best practices and tips to help them in the future.
As in 2006, the camp was an interactive learning event where students were encouraged to ask questions and lead some sessions. They were also given financial management challenges where they could put their newly-gained knowledge into action. The activities included a budgeting task at a local market and a business plan development competition.
To see how a real-life business is managed, the students also visited a dried fish factory and had the chance to talk with the factory's senior managers. “The camp, and Citigroup Thailand’s other related programs reinforce Citigroup’s commitment to promoting financial education at all levels of society,” said Amit Sah, Country Business Manager, Citibank.
"We recognize the importance of helping to provide a financial education foundation for young people. They are at a stage in life where they are learning fast, and in an age of increasing consumerism, need to know about personal financial reality and responsibility.
"Therefore, it’s important that our youth get adequate knowledge and learn disciplines that will serve them well in the future. Especially, as underlined by His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy philosophy, knowing the value of money before making spending decisions."
This year's camp was held at Bangpakong Power Plant, Chacherngsao province and involved students from four schools (10 students from each school) – Cholpratansongkro, Santirat Wittayalai, Thepsirin Nonthaburi, and Samsennok (Pracharajanukul).
Citibank worked in conjunction with the National Council on Social Welfare of Thailand to launch Wealth of the Future in 2006 that included two youth development camps for secondary school students from greater Bangkok.
As in 2006, Citibank employee volunteers again played important roles as trainers and mentors. Financial education is one of Citigroup’s main focus areas in its community support programs. Citigroup has committed US$ 200 million over the next 10 years to support financial education initiatives for individuals, families, and communities.
