Citigroup Supports Innovative Financial Education Training Program for Southeast Asian Microentrepreneurs
Jakarta – Citigroup Indonesia is the sponsor of an innovative Financial Education "train-the-trainer" program that promotes the development of microentrepreneurship in South East Asia. Thirty participants from five countries in the region are participating in the eight-day training workshop that began in Jakarta yesterday.
When the course is completed, the attending trainers will have the skills and knowledge and expertise to teach money management and business basics to microentrepreneurs in their respective countries.
Speaking about the program, Shariq Mukhtar, Country Business Manager, Citibank said, "Financial education is an important investment for everyone and through this initiative we will help microentepreneurs in Indonesia, and other countries to identify ways to build their businesses in the long term."
Topics to be covered include, budgeting, debt management, financial negotiation and banking services. The modules will also include successful microfinance case studies from various countries.
Managed by international NGOs, Microfinance Opportunities, Freedom for Hunger, and Citigroup Indonesia (through its Citibank Peka volunteer organization), the Jakarta train-the-trainer program is the first to be run in Indonesia. Similar programs have been conducted in Peru and the Philippines said Danielle Hopkins, Financial Education Manager of Microfinance Opportunities.
"We are delighted to introduce this program in Indonesia. It's stage one in what we hope is a long-term campaign, and our next step is to further customize the learning modules and introduce more courses in Indonesia."
Following this workshop, Citibank Peka will launch a pilot project in January 2007, to train microfinance institutions in Indonesia. Citibank Peka will work with Lembaga Management (from the University of Indonesia) to deliver the course.
