Indonesia: Citigroup’s Success Fund 2006 Awards Grants to 92 Teachers

Jakarta – 92 teachers from greater Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya will be implementing new creative learning programs in their schools thanks to support grants provided by the 2006 Citigroup Success Fund (CSF).

The 92 project ideas were judged the best from the 547 proposals submitted this year (188 from Jakarta, 154 from Surabaya, 115 from Semarang, and 90 from Bandung). The teachers will each receive a Rp5m grant and have until the end of the year to implement their programs. From these, the 10-best projects will be entered into a grand final to be held next year.

"We believe the CSF program has not only successfully empowered teachers, but also allowed them to be recognized for their success in promoting creative learning. Citigroup is again extremely proud of their achievements and will continue to support the program," said Mr. Peter Eliot, Citigroup Country Officer Indonesia.

Mr. Eliot's statement is backed by research conducted by NGO, Yayasan Hope Indonesia. The findings of a Hope Indonesia survey showed 96% of the teachers who had participated in previous CSF programs believed the program had increased their creativity in teaching. 94% of the teachers said students who were involved in the activities also demonstrated a greater willingness to learn.

"CSF has also increased creativity and tightened the bond between teachers and students. We hope the program can be developed further to include vocational schools and perhaps SMP (junior high schools) in the future," said Charles Ham, Country Director of Yayasan Hope Indonesia.

This year's projects will be focused on two topics:
  1. Financial planning and education
  2. Activities related to topical issues and news stories
The proposals were ranked by a judging panel, which was comprised of notables from the press and education sectors and representatives from Citigroup and Yayasan Hope Indonesia.

The CSF has been running in Indonesia since 2003 and is managed by Citigroup Indonesia through its Citibank Peka program in collaboration with Yayasan Hope Indonesia. To date, CSF has involved more than 14,000 students and 1,200 teachers.

As further support, Citigroup and Yayasan Hope Indonesia publish and issue the 'AKSIGURU' newsletter to help teachers communicate and share ideas with each other. First published in August 2005, this quarterly is a popular read for many teachers.

The CSF also involves many Citigroup employee volunteers. More than 800 Citibank Peka volunteers have participated in the CSF program since 2003.

Citibank Peka is funded through the Citigroup Foundation has allocated Rp1.9 billion (USD 211,865) to support this year's CSF program. Citibank Peka has made an overall contribution of Rp4.2 billion (USD 469,928) for CSF from 2003 to 2005.
