Taiwan: Citigroup Kids Wealth Foundation Program to Involve Over 30,000 Students

Taipei – By February 2008, over 30,000 elementary school students will be taught the basics of money management thanks to the Citigroup Kids Wealth Foundation (CKWF) financial education program.

Run in collaboration with the Financial Supervisory Commission and IfKids Theatre Company the recently launched 2006 CKWF builds on the success of the 2005 debut campaign. The primary target of the Citigroup Foundation funded CKWF program are fourth-graders and sixth-graders (10- to 12-year-olds) and the initiative includes two components:

The teaching of financial concepts presented through fun plays and skits incorporating humor, real life situations, and the Agent Penny and Will Power financial education comic book

"The 2005 CKWF enjoyed a great start and successfully introduced financial education to over 12,000 children in 30 primary schools in greater Taipei," said Taiwan Citibank Business Manager Victor Kuan at the launch.

"Based on this success, from September 2006 to February 2008, we are launching the program in northern Taiwan to cities such as Taoyuan and Hsinchu. In total, we hope to educate and entertain over 30,000 children from 70 schools and 10 communities."

Mr Kuan added, "Our new program will provide more information on credit, interest, and careful spending. The 2006 campaign will also explain the difference between economic needs and wants, and the importance of saving and planning to realize future goals."

Mr Gary Tseng, Director-General of Bureau of Monetary, Financial Supervisory Commission reinforced this view.

"Good or bad money management can have a profound influence in a person's life. Therefore, it's important to instill good saving and spending habits and ideas as soon as possible. Given this, the Financial Supervisory Commission is a strong supporter of financial education and we will work with Citigroup and other financial institutions to implement education programs at schools and universities."

The importance of early learning was echoed by Mr Chao Tzu-chiang, the manager of the IfKids Theatre Company.

"Primary school is the golden period for learning and development. And one of the best ways to teach is through fun plays and skits and interactive discussion. These sessions leave a lasting impression on the children and we are delighted to be able to continue to work with Citigroup."
